Aravind Adiga: The White Tiger

the things we do for books:

yesterday, i finished "The White Tiger" by Aravind Adiga. they had the book at one of the huge bookstores at London Heathrow, and i just couldn't resist. they also had "Shantaram". and a "buy 1 - get the second at half price" deal up. so i just had to get the books. which left me with just 20 pence in the pocket.. not enough for a bottle of water to get me through the waiting time and the flight.

i knew this before i paid the books. and still walked up to the counter, knowing that this would leave me thirsty. "brilliant," i said to myself. but then thought twice. and went ahead, to do something i usually never would consider. but for books, i did it: i asked a stranger for 70 pence. and received them. and boarded the plane, happy, with water, and words.

fast forward a couple of days, to page 205 of the book, to a scene that is about a man.. standing in front of books. could be me, i thought.

"So I stood around that big square of books. Standing around books, even books in a foreign language, you feel a kind of electricity buzzing up towards you. It just happens, the way you get erect around girls wearing tight jeans.
Except here what happens is that your brain starts to hum."
