Wild Bird Wednesday

Two weeks ago, i went birding for a day in the S'Albufera Natural Park, Mallorca. and then started to visit bird blogs, to see the notes and photos from real birders who went there.

Now I just came across this link: Wild Bird Wednesday, a photo / blog link sharing initiative by a blogger + birder from UK. so good. and i even have a recent bird photo: this is an "Amsel" (blackbird), it sat on the neighbour's roof two days ago. Their ever-varied songs are part of those May days.

And here's the birding link from Mallorca: ....gone birding

sky friday: never seen before

my sky moment for this week is a sight i've never seen before: last week, while in France, we had breakfast outside - and watched, like in a sky show, an unusual flock of birds. "maybe doves", we wondered. but they didn't look like doves.

i tried to catch a picture, see for yourself if you can identify them before you scroll beyond the image:

now back home, i compared it to pictures of migrating birds...

....and tried "migrating storks". and yes, that's what we have seen:

there even is a stork migration map on Wikipedia that shows their path: along Southern France and Southern Spain, to Gibraltar, and then across the Strait of Gibraltar into Africa.

all the skies the storks see on the way... here's the one where we saw the flock, in the South of France:

tuesday poem: Swallow

Swallow

When you have the hiccups
someone’s thinking of you
somewhere in the world,
my grandma explained to me once

while I sat in her kitchen
on my embroidered cushion
counting the tapestry roses
that grew in rows on the wall.

Tell me about your school day,
she would always say,
and I would tell her about
the fossils of birds, the way they

can last forever when they fall
to the ground in the right place
and how they are made to plates
to hang on the auditorium wall.

When I arrived too late for lunch
she told me not to worry,
the youngest and the oldest
have a right to be heedless,

she would state, and leave
the door accidentally open.
But what if I want
the hiccups to stop,

I asked one day, there,
between strawberry jars.
Then you drown a sugar cube
in vinegar and swallow it,

she said, and I thought
it was a joke until I tried.
Until this sweet sour taste
blended into the memory of her.

for the Tuesday Poem series

the poem, i thought of it when i saw the swallows here in the sky - the had returned while i was in Mallorca.  and the note about the oldest - this now makes me think of the old lady who lives 2 houses further. she had to go to hospital because she fell. hopefully it's just bruises. she didn't want to leave her house, afraid they won't let her return alone, afraid of the door of it closing to her.

the image of birds - this also connects to the cover of Open City from yesterday's blog entry, and the lines on birds, right in the second paragraph of the book: "Not long before this aimless wanderings began, I had fallen into the habit of watching bird migrations from my apartment.."

Hervideros birds, panorama drive, and some rain

some moments from today - which turned into a day of changing skies here, starting with rain, and then continuing with sun, clouds, sun, clouds, rain, sun...

the first photo is my contribution to photo friday's theme "Graceful". the second picture shows were the birds were surfing the sky: at the cliffs of Los Hervideros, where lava met the ocean in the 18th century, during the last vulcanoe eruption here. and the third one: is from this morning. which fits the current sky. rain again, for some minutes.

birds (+ horses)

the new photo friday theme is: animals.

which made me think of a recent conversation with Rose Hunter - YB opened to submissions in September. the theme is: animals. (here the guidelines)

Rose: "Yes! YB is open to subs.... We're getting some really good ones. Ron asked about animal pics and I said yes, send! If you have any animal pics too, send!"

Dorothee: "animal photos... hmm... i am not really that much into animal images. but i took a horse image in france, i just sent it, just for the moment: it connects to your horsies.

Rose: "Thanks for the horsey. Where was the pic taken? I could maybe do a horsey collage / horse / mule / donkey theme.... :) OR - just add him to them, on FB.... It looks like a Shetland pony (?) ...Yes - I know you don't have a lot of pics of animals on your blog. Plants! :) Although I did notice some butterflies...."

Dorothee: "The horsey is a Pyrenee Horse. Or rather: I don’t know which kind of horse it is, but we met in the Pyrenee mountains, on the way to the summit of mountain Tourmalet. Oh, and yes: the butterfly images  -and thinking of it, there are birds, too."

--
that was a week ago. and now, photo friday: animals. as if picking up on it. so now i looked for birds. the ones above are from France, same morning and place as the Narbonne sunrise.  and more birds, in this blog: life as a journey / birds

the horse is online, now, too - Rose put an international horse collage together in facebook: Issue 5: Animals, Or, What Is Turnin out to Be: The Equine Album.

black bird moon

from this morning: a blackbird and the sliver of moon.
not included in the image: the blackbird song, with its feeling of moving towards spring.

re: breathtaking

the new photo friday theme is: breathtaking. "wuthering heights", i thought first, and: "spectacular view". but then i remembered this moment that really took my breath away, from january last year. i went for a walk, then snow started to fall, and the wind was ice cold. that's when i saw those little tiny birds. in a bush. sitting there. in this cold. that i wouldn't be able to survive when locked outside.

and good to see that someone else already put up wuthering heights and spectacular views.

birds

serendipity: a flock of birds flew by just while i stood at the open window to take a morning picture.
if this week had a name, it probably would be: winged.

Milan

yesterday, the Milan cruised the sky again - and this time i was lucky, and had the chance to take a picture. it doesn't really show in the picture, but the wings are huge. the other birds disappear when the Milan is around.

moss and feathers

a day of rainshowers. in between, fragments of blue sky. and this bird. sitting there, on the roof of a garden shack. looking towards the southern horizon. it's a Gartenrotschwanz - and with that, a migrating bird. the other birds of its kind are gone already. this one is still here. it's easy to recognize it: it's the only with white wing feathers.

i wonder if it decided to stay. to not take the journey. i think of it as an ancestor bird, one that has the gift to turn into a ghost bird during winter, to sidestep the elements, the usual circle of arrivals and departures.

then again, maybe it's just looking for the last insects.

(and now i just looked up the english word for Gartenrotschwanz: Common Redstart).

flock of swallows

all summer, there has been a flock of swallows around here: about 10 birds, criss-crossing the sky every now and then. yesterday, there were, i don't know. 50? 60? a whole sky of swallows. they kept darting through the air. i took a picture, then tried to catch a single bird in flight.

i ended up with around 20 photos of empty sky. and then, finally, i got lucky.

garden guest

the Hausrotschwanz-bird visited this morning again. and for once, i was quick enough to catch a photo. i really would like to be able to talk to this bird, and ask where it has spent winter - Italy? Croatia? somewhere southern, somewhere beyond the Alps, beyond the snow, that's all i know.
