the wall

this day, 20 years ago, the german-german border in Berlin was opened, after 44 years of separation. "Mauerfall", the day is called in germany: "Wall-fall" - even though the wall kept standing: it was the border control points that were opened.

yet the wall tumbled from that day on: people started to move away parts of the wall, as relics and souvenirs. today, only a few parts of the wall remain - and there are plans to create symbolic wall-parts / ground markers, to keep the memory of the Wall.

needless to say, there are lots of historic docus and films in TV these days. one that surprised me was "The Invisible Frame" + "Cycling the Frame": in 1988, filmmaker Cyntia Beatt toured the (then still closed) Berlin wall on a bike, together with actress Tilda Swinton. in 2009, they repeated the tour. 2 films, both like mediations.

seeing the images of Berlin also made me think of my own trip there, in summer 2007. the remaining bits of the wall, they looked like a canvas for graffiti..
