story challenge: Colony

there was a challenge story i was struggling with last week. the challenge sounded like fun at first: "write a story with these 5 terms included: palm tree, yogurt, red suit, sparkling hanging balls, lowing cows". such a teasing combination. i felt like giving it a try, yet first took some time to get organized, and put a list of things-to-do together. the list turned out longer than expected. so i decided to skip the story contest.

well. turns out the lowing cows didn't want to be skipped. friday morning, they brought me back to writing the challenge story. i started it, thinking i make it a quick short funny thing, but the story kept growing in unexpected ways, and turned into something deeper than i expected. i think it's the first story i wrote from the point of view of a mother with a child, and all this in first person. also, it brought me to starfish.

the story is up now already in the fictionaut short story challenge, here's the direct link:
Colony.

+ a nice match: yesterday, i browsed one of the paperbags with give-aways that i brought from the frankfurt book fair. and one of it was this ocean postcard, with these lines on it:

"Ich tauche. Unter Wasser ist es kühler, stiller, blassblau. Purpurschwarze Seeigel hängen an den Felsen."
"I dive. Underwater it is cooler, quieter, paleblue. Purpleblack see urchin are hanging on the riffs."
.

You did an amazing job on this challenge, Dorothee. I love the story and not just because of the sea monkeys but because of the depth of your characters.
