2009 projects (or: the side effects of being in transit)



2009 projects / publications
for a long while, my main focus was online. i just checked, indeed all the stories, images, poems, visuals in my publication file 2009 are online publications. each comes with a neat link, and together they form an online list.

what isn't visible in this list: parallel to those online pieces, i worked on 2 larger projects - one of them is a collaborate novel, 2028. the other project is a story collection: in transit. both are print projects. the novel is in query stage. and in transit, from start i felt that it should be something printed, too. a paperback book, something you can put in a bag or in a backpack, to take it along, to read while on a way.

while working on in transit, i revisited road + train + travel stories i had written. most of them were online. i first worked with 2 files, and copy+pasted in page view. then i printed some pages, to see how they might fit together in different combinations. it's different, i realized again, to work directly on paper. (more on the paper-effect, here: "hand writing" - that's about poetry and page and pen, from november).

parallel to the sorting, i worked on a first cover draft, and ordered prints, to create a complete paperback sample. and while at it, i also ordered prints from an image that went online last august in qarrtsiluni, as start of the "words of power" issue: lung ta / wind words.

i knew that image by heart. it came together by a time+weather coincidence (here the whole story). and i tried a whole series of crops until i got it right. it probably is one of my favourite images of 2009. but i never had seen it in print. it took in transit to make me think of the idea of a printed version of wind words. and when the photos arrived, i was surprised: the same photo, in print, it felt different. where is that coming from? maybe from place / mindset: online work is viewed online, on a monitor, by nature. which for me mostly means: at my work desk, which always comes with a gradual working -mood / -attention-span. plus, there is a 'standard' distance to a monitor, while our distance to a print-photo that we put up on a shelf is changing. maybe there are other factors included, too. not sure.

i just know, the very next impulse i had was: to order some more prints. to turn the wind words into postcards. and send them out. via airmail. as surprise, to the ones that helped me on the way to 'in transit': Karyn Eisler and Steve Wing.

Virtual and tangible realities intersect for me as I experience the same photographs and words in different ways, in different worlds.

so interesting. especially with the ongoing media / literature discussion of online vs print. for me, it's rather: online and print. 2 worlds, overlapping. 2 sources of inspiration, 2 rooms of work, connecting to each other, stirring each other. .
